Philip Richardson. The Stormy Petrel of Chess.
Hilbert, John S.

hardcover

Description:
Philip Richardson, 1841-1920, was one of the best US players in last third of 19th century. He has been almost forgotten as he scarcely took part in tournaments. However, he had great results against strong players of the time, for example against E. Delmar +9, -8, =1; S. Lipschutz +1, -1, =4; J. Mason +5, -7, = 1; S. Loyd +2, -0, =0 etc. Only Steinitz and Mackenzie had clearly superior records against him. The book includes Richardsons biography, 193 annotated games and game fragments, 24 problems and 2 endgames. Many games and problems were found in chess columns and other contemporary sources and are published in a book form for the first time. Indexes of players and openings at the end. The author, John S. Hilbert, is noted US chess historian .
